BPI Written Exam - Section 2 Buildings and Their Systems

1. 1. Determine Areas of Customer Complaints / Concerns in Interview

The customer interview at the beginning of an energy audit is a very useful tool for many reasons:

• It let's homeowners become confident and comfortable with you.
• You can get clues on what to look for during your inspection.
• You can uncover their pain points that can be addressed during your sale like if little Jimmy's room is hot so he can't sleep at night, if high energy usage is a lifestyle problem vs an efficiency problem, what the homeowner has tried in the past to lower their energy bills and more.
• Our auditors will always ask probing questions to get homeowners to think about issues we want to bring up later like the affects of high room pressures, air leakage and misaligned insulation.

This is a perfect time to ask for a copy of the utility bill (which we do when we book the audit) and to have any paperwork filled out required for your utility program.  If your audits are done with a sales rep and an auditor, usually the sales rep will do the interview while the auditor starts taking measurements.
