BPI Written Exam - Section 2 Buildings and Their Systems4. Thermal Boundaries and Insulation Applications
A thermal boundary is the area around a building shell where the insulation and air barrier are in direct contact to resist thermal transmission and air leakage. A simplified way to describe the thermal boundary is the boundary between the inside of the home and the outside of the home.
The boundary is made up of two things: 1. Insulation 2. An air barrier The air barrier and insulation must be in continuous contact, if they are not, the thermal boundary is misaligned. An auditor’s job is to determine where the thermal boundary is currently and what work is involved for proper alignment. Next Section2a. Building Components
