BPI Written Exam - Section 1 Building Science Fundamentals

2. Factors That Affect Insulation Performance: Density, Installation, Moisture. 

There are 3 factors that affect insulation performance and you should know these for the test:


  1. Density - how much mass/volume does the material have.
  2. Installation - must be 100% in contact with an air barrier (drywall in most cases) and not laid on top of electrical wires, studs or over soffits. Insulation misalignments are common in attics where fiberglass batt insulation is left over arches, soffits and canned lights, leaving a gap between the drywall ceiling and the insulation and causing an air barrier issue. The thermal boundary of the house must have the insulation married, 100% in contact with the drywall at all times or you will have a insulation installation problem.  Once there is a gap between the thermal boundary, the outside air (heat in the summer or cold air in the winter) will transfer the most at that weakest spot in the thermal boundary and reduce the entire wall or ceiling's R-value by half if as little as a 5% gap is open in the thermal boundary.
  3. Moisture - moisture from exhaust fans venting directly on the insulation, leaky plumbing or damp drywall can greatly reduce the insulation performance.  Insulation works because of the tiny air pockets slow down heat transfer from the outside into our homes.  If those air pockets become compressed or get replaced by water, insulation doesn't work the same.
