BPI Written Exam - Section 2 Buildings and Their Systems
The DOE insulation map above is not code but the recommended insulation values for optimal heat gain reduction in each climate. The map is a good indication of where similar climate concerns are occurring. For example, in Region 2 the south and south eastern part of the US is characterized by being hot and humid. Areas of concern for energy auditors should be drainage, roof slopes, crawl space moisture problems, wood rot and mold. Each region will have homes built under the same or similar building codes as well. Expect to find ductwork and air handlers in attics in the majority of homes in the Phoenix area so in the hot Phoenix summers homeowners are concerned about their high energy bills. In the Chicago area balloon frame construction was used in older homes so air sealing is a major energy saver. In California, the milder weather permits for more air quality concerns. By understanding each climates' specific concerns you can build a foundation to solve a homeowners' root comfort, air quality and safety and efficiency problems.
